Extra, Extra! Read all about it!

Family and Friends,

If you follow my best friend's blog, From-Mom-2-Mom, then you've probably heard about this fantastic book titled,"Calling Extra" that's recently been published. For my family and friends that may not have heard about it yet, this post is for you!

I've wanted to write this short post for a while now, but I wanted the chance to read the book before posting about it. A new and already dear friend of mine Kristina Romero wrote it, and just published it! Now that I'm half way through this gripping tale and am entirely hooked, I feel so eager to share.

Calling Extra

13-year-old Elsie Lutz is changed forever when her father is jailed for a crime he did not commit. Now alone, Elsie must fend for herself in turn-of-the-century New York. Tides change when she befriends Grin, a teenage newsboy with a kind heart and a mysterious past. Elsie soon finds herself wrapped up in the newsboy strike of 1899, a sweeping act of social activism led by children. Through the brotherhood of the newsboys, Elsie discovers her own courage, bravery and self-determination. But will what she learns be enough to conquer the overwhelming odds, find her own voice and ultimately free her father?

I invite you to view Kristina's Author page here, and check out her website for Calling Extra  to find out more info!

I rarely "promote" things on our family's blog, but friends writing books is kinda a big deal. I'd really love to hear your thoughts and I know Kristina would love to see the feedback! Feel free to leave a comment below to let me know you've stopped by. :)

Below are just some of my favorites. I blew them up nice and big so you can get a good look at them. ;)

Enjoy!

Bethanie: my childhood friend

Does anyone else besides myself remember collecting Lisa Frank stationary when they were little girls? My neighbor and best friend Bethanie used to collect tons of it. I was always jealous of her collection. I had a few things, but Bethanie had the full, all-out collection of everything Lisa Frank. She kept it so organized and had everything I wanted.

Before I moved from Richmond, VA to Gaithersburg, MD, I gave her the little bit of Lisa Frank stuff that I had. We moved away, and I eventually lost touch with my best friend.

Having Bethanie as a friend when I was a little girl influenced who I became as an adult. I loved what a sweet person Bethanie was. She looked up to me because I was older. I think I subconsciously knew that  she looked up to me, because I remember thinking that I needed to be a good example. I've always kinda been the older one in friendships I've had with other girls growing up, and this mindset of wanting to set a good example has always stuck with me and played apart of who I am, my character, and who I want to be. Even when we lost touch for all those years, I would think back at this dear friendship I used to have with my friend and would pray for her. I was used to loosing touch with people who were dear to me (grandparents, my father, my friends in Richmond) but Bethanie was one of the hardest losses for me. I missed my friend.

Fast forward to about 10 years later. I found Bethanie on MySpace. I was ecstatic and in tears; I found my childhood friend! She was married, and had a son! Jonathan and I visited her and her family during one of our visits to Richmond, where we reunited. We reminisced about being children and shared with each other old memories that only we would remember, including our crazy fetish for Lisa Frank stationary.

5 years later = Christmastime 2011 (like, 2 months ago). We had Bethanie, her husband Zuhir, and her 2 boys over to our house from Richmond, VA. I knew that Bethanie would be bringing some of her Lisa Frank stuff with her so we could look through it and reminisce. What I **didn't** know is that she'd be bring ALL of it up here, still completely organized from years ago, and would be giving every bit of it to Schuyler! Sky was so excited to have an endless amount of crafts and stationary. I was shocked that Bethanie gave her everything she ever collected. It meant so much to me, because I know how much this stuff meant to Bethanie.

Sky uses this stationary every day. Not joking:: ev-ery-sin-gle-day. It's been so nostalgic rediscovering the different patterns and characters on this sentimental stationary, bringing back vivid memories of being upstairs in Bethanie's room going through her precious collection. You wanna know something fun? Since December, I've been finding all of these letters Bethanie wrote about 15 years ago. All written to me. Because we lost touch, she had no way of getting them to me. But she kept writing. And saved every one. Tonight, Sky was writing a note to her best friend, Kaylie, who also lives next door. When she opened the envelope to put her letter inside, she pulled out yet another precious note Bethanie had written to me over 15 years ago.

I cried.

It's been a sweet reminder from the Lord of how GOOD God has been to me throughout my life, to give me friends that care for me so much. Even though we had lost touch, Bethanie continued to write letters to me, as though I had never left her life. And that's the cool thing: We never really did leave each others' lives; she's been apart of my life and my heart for most of my life, and in finding these letters I'm able to see that I never left her life, either.

Friends are such a gift from the Lord. I'm so blessed to have true, meaningful, sweet, lasting, loyal friendships with dear gems such as Bethanie. Love you, friend.

Baby Shower for Alissa

The day finally came for Jess and me to throw this much-anticipated shower for our best friend. :) With Reagan Avonlea being the second girl for the Zaal's, Alissa was adamant that we not throw her a big shower... but Liss means so much to so many different people... we wouldn't have it any other way.

I couldn't have pulled this all off myself. My husband was so amazing, right there to help me with whatever petty last minute stuff I had. Judy came over the night before and did tons of crafting with me. That woman can do anything. And with all the craftiness and yummy's that Jess brought to the shower, I learned that Jess is a girl after my own heart. She helped me with half of everything needed to pull it all off.

The food was amazing. The decorations were outta control. Anne of Avonlea quotes were placed throughout the home. The gifts were perfect... everything just fell into place. But beyond all of this, Alissa had a huge smile plastered on her face the entire time. And this made everything worth it.

.family.

This needs a caption. :) Mom-Mom loves the color green; particularly this color chartreuse. So I ran upstairs and pulled my green pillows from my closet and used them to decorate with for the shower. Judy said, "I bet you Mom-Mom is going to pretend to steal your green pillows! She LOVES that color green!!!" And sure enough, at the end of the party, she pretended to walk out of the house with them. :) It made my day. I had decided ahead of time that, if she did that I would go ahead and give her one of them. :) It's always more fun to give things away then to keep them for ourselves, I think. Love you, Mom-Mom.

.sweet friends.

 .games.

Jess came up with this terrific game for the shower! Each person drew a picture of what they thought Reagan will look like. Liss picked the winner... I think it was the top row in the middle because of her big smile. :) ((Don't you love the cat?! ha!)

.gifts.

Judy painted and crafted this beautiful purple box for Reagan's room.

.purpley decor.

handmade poms.

water bottles rapped in brown ribbon. even the bucket was purple inside. :)
floating candles in Mason Jars. Who doesn't love Mason Jars?
Anne of Avonlea quotes were placed throughout the shower. Here they were hung in the opening. And Judy made these amazing pinwheels stuck in votives and held by sand. On the outside, of each was a letter, and they were grouped together to spell out "Reagan".
Anne of Avonlea quote. Just seemed so fitting. Especially if you've read Alissa's story on her blog.

.food.

I kid you not when I say... the food was phenomenal. Or, maybe I was just really hungry by the time 10:30 came around. :)

Jess made these amazing cake pops. They were on everyone's plate.

...and aren't they just purdy?

I made these little dress napkins. So petite and dainty. I felt bad wiping my dirty mouth on them.

Judy found ALL the purple candy for the shower. So elegant, no?
*Someone* had a little too much sugar that day. :)
...yummy yummy...

Mini Pancakes, with blueberries and mint. These just made me smile. :)
Vanilla Almond Cake with Blackberry Buttercream Frosting.
The Favors. You got TWO favors for coming to this shower! The little jars read, "You are sweet as can be, precious to me, baby of mine." || And Judy made little take-out boxes filled with all kinds of personalized and purpley candies!! On the outside there was an Anne of Avonlea quote attached to each box. Fun stuff.

Liss, it was an honor for us to throw this shower for you, my sweet friend! You are my Godsend and I love you.
